I have been using Propecia for 5 years now. I have totally stopped my hair loss, and have in fact re-grown hair on the front of my hair line and on the sides. I am completely happy with my decision... and so is my wife! Many of my friends wish they had started taking Propecia earlier like I did!

I started noticing hair loss on the crown of my head so I asked my physician. He stated, "only use Propecia, there are tons of other products on the market, however, only Propecia has clinical studies backing up their claims. Thanks doc, my hair looks great

Understanding Male Pattern Hair Loss (MPHL)

The more you know about your MPHL, the better decisions you’ll make.

Male pattern hair loss (MPHL) is the most common form of hair loss, representing close to 95% of all cases of hair loss in men. And about half of all men experience MPHL by age 50. So if you have MPHL, you’re certainly not alone. You’re probably very familiar with this type of hair loss. It can begin with a receding hairline, slow balding at the crown, or both. It is typically a progressive condition—left untreated, the hair loss will likely continue. By the time you may notice your hair loss, 50% of your hair may be gone. That’s why it’s important to start taking PROPECIA as soon as possible, to help limit or stop further hair loss and possibly regrow some hair. Scientists believe that MPHL is inherited from either side of the family and that a chemical called dihydrotestosterone—more commonly referred to as DHT—is a key factor in hair loss

Stages of Male Pattern Hair Loss (MPHL)

Time marches on... and so can MPHL.

Male pattern hair loss is nothing new. It’s not rare, either. One trip around the office or a visit to a sports event will remind you that you’re not alone. In fact, MPHL affects about 50% of men by age 50. It can begin in your teens, 20s, or 30s, and before you know it, much of your hair may already be gone.

Without treatment, MPHL usually gets worse.

The Norwood-Hamilton scale shows the progressive stages of MPHL. You may find using the scale helpful in identifying your stage. Left untreated, MPHL is a condition that usually gets worse. Like you, most men would prefer to keep as much hair as possible. But unfortunately, desire alone does not keep hair from falling out. Your MPHL will most likely continue, causing the bald spot on your crown to expand.

Causes of Male Pattern Hair Loss (MPHL)

Your mother’s father has plenty of hair, so you won’t go bald, right? Not so fast. Actually, MPHL can be inherited from either side of the family. Your hair follicles may be more susceptible to a chemical in the body called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT.

DHT and MPHL

Men with MPHL have elevated levels of DHT in their balding scalps. Scientists believe DHT contributes to the progressive shrinking of hair follicles and a decrease in the number of visible hairs.

DHT is a substance in the scalp that can shrink the hair follicle until it no longer produces visible hair. Scientists believe DHT and family history are key factors in hair loss. PROPECIA blocks the formulation of DHT in the scalp.
